The Opportunity

The Ocean Freight Manager plays a key role in driving the success and growth of Ocean Cargo operations while supporting the company’s overall objectives. This individual is responsible for leading and managing the Ocean Department in Toronto, overseeing day-to-day operations, identifying new business opportunities, and ensuring top-tier customer service. Additionally, the Ocean Freight Manager provides leadership to the team, promoting operational efficiency and ensuring alignment with company policies and strategic goals.

Position Description

  • Develop and implement operational processes to improve efficiency, productivity, and service quality in the Ocean Cargo Department.
  • Monitor KPIs, identify improvement areas, and drive initiatives to meet department goals and budget.
  • Oversee the execution of Ocean Cargo operations, ensuring compliance with import/export regulations.
  • Lead process improvements to boost operational efficiency and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as the escalation point for critical client issues, providing prompt and effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with sales to identify business opportunities and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Manage vendor and carrier relationships, negotiating pricing to optimize profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
    Prepare and present timely financial reports on department performance, revenue, and profitability.
  • Monitor budget adherence and identify cost-saving opportunities.
    Drive initiatives to meet and exceed revenue and profit targets.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Ocean Cargo team to maintain high performance and operational excellence.
  • Conduct regular training, performance evaluations, and feedback sessions to foster employee growth.
  • Assess team composition and staffing needs to ensure adequate expertise and coverage.
  • Ensure timely completion of administrative tasks, including time management, vacation planning, and payroll.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Experience

Minimum of 8 years of experience in ocean freight management or a similar leadership role.

Qualifications

  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
  • Extensive knowledge of international logistics, ocean freight operations, and regulatory requirements, including hands-on experience with eManifest filing compliance.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expertise in negotiating competitive pricing and favorable terms with carriers and vendors.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities to address operational challenges and drive continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
    Proficient in logistics and freight management software, with hands-on experience in
  • CargoWise a strong asset.
  • Willingness to work overtime or after hours as needed.

Education

  • University degree or other post-secondary education or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Professional certifications in logistics or supply chain management are an asset.
