Estimator – Display & Packaging Manufacturing

Company Description

A leading print/packaging manufacturer specializing in custom display packaging, printed packaging, retail displays, and point-of-purchase solutions is looking for an experienced Estimator in Milton, Ontario.

Compensation

As Estimator, you play a key role in developing accurate, competitive quotes for custom packaging and display projects.  You will be responsible for reviewing customer requirements, drawings, specifications, and production details to develop accurate cost estimates and quotations.  The integrated manufacturing environment combines creative design, prepress, printing, finishing, converting, and assembly to deliver high-quality solutions for major consumer and retail brands.

Position Description

  • Review customer RFQs, specifications, artwork, drawings, samples, and structural designs to determine project requirements.
  • Prepare accurate and competitive estimates and quotations for display packaging and print manufacturing projects.
  • Determine material requirements including paperboard, corrugated, substrates, laminates, coatings, adhesives, and other components.
  • Calculate manufacturing costs including printing, die-cutting, gluing, folding, finishing, assembly, labour, tooling, and outside services.
  • Work closely with Sales, Customer Service, Production, Prepress, Purchasing, and Engineering to ensure estimates are accurate and achievable.
  • Interpret structural drawings and understand how designs translate into manufacturing processes.
  • Identify the most efficient and cost-effective production methods for each project.
  • Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor pricing where required.
  • Develop accurate make-ready, waste, setup, run-time, labour, material, tooling, and freight calculations.
  • Maintain accurate estimating data, costing models, and pricing information within the company’s ERP or estimating system.
  • Review historical jobs and production data to improve estimating accuracy.
  • Identify potential production challenges, risks, and cost discrepancies before quotations are submitted.
  • Support Sales in understanding project costs, margins, pricing strategies, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Participate in quote reviews and provide recommendations on alternative materials, processes, or specifications where appropriate.
  • Ensure all estimates are completed within required customer and internal deadlines.
  • Maintain organized records of quotations, revisions, and supporting documentation.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of estimating experience within print, packaging, folding carton, corrugated, POP/display, or a related manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of commercial printing and packaging manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, dielines, specifications, and production requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of substrates, materials, printing processes, finishing, converting, and packaging production.
  • Experience costing multi-step manufacturing processes and determining material and labour requirements.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience working with ERP, estimating, MIS, or production management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple quotations and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Commercial awareness and a strong understanding of margins and profitability.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining quality and customer requirements.
