The Opportunity

This is a role for someone who has moved beyond simply executing designs and is ready to influence how they are done—particularly in environments where fixture design and welding processes are central to production success.

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of complex jigs, fixtures, and tooling systems, guiding projects from concept through to real-world application on the production floor.

This role is best suited for someone who not only understands design in theory, but who has seen their designs built, used, and stress-tested in welding and assembly environments—and knows how to improve them.

You will be relied upon not just for your technical ability, but for your judgment, your ability to anticipate fabrication and weld-related challenges, and your capacity to bring clarity to complex, production-driven design problems.

This is an opportunity to step into a role where your experience directly shapes how things are built—not just how they look on screen.

Position Description

  • Design and develop jigs, fixtures, and tooling systems with a strong emphasis on welding applications and manufacturability
  • Create detailed 3D models and production drawings using SolidWorks, ensuring designs are practical, buildable, and efficient
  • Translate part data and customer requirements into robust fixturing solutions that support repeatable, high-quality welding and assembly processes
  • Collaborate closely with fabrication and production teams to ensure designs align with real-world welding constraints, tolerances, and sequencing
  • Apply GD&T principles to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and downstream production success
  • Identify and resolve potential issues related to fit-up, weld distortion, access, and clamping strategies early in the design phase
  • Review and refine designs based on shop feedback, continuously improving fixture performance and usability
  • Participate in client-facing discussions, providing practical, experience-based design input
  • Act as a technical resource across teams, supporting project execution from concept through installation
  • Mentor junior designers, particularly in best practices for fixture design and SolidWorks modeling standards

Experience

  • Engineering degree or Engineering Technologist/Technician diploma
  • 5 to 8+ years of hands-on experience designing jigs, fixtures, and tooling in automated or production manufacturing environments
  • Demonstrated experience supporting welding-based projects, including designing for weld access, sequencing, and distortion control
  • Proven track record of taking designs from concept through to shop floor implementation

Qualifications

  • Advanced, hands-on proficiency in SolidWorks (this is a core tool, not a secondary one)
  • Strong experience designing jigs and fixtures for production environments
  • Practical understanding of welding processes and how they impact design decisions
  • Solid understanding of GD&T and mechanical design principles
  • Experience working in environments where designs must translate effectively to fabrication and assembly
  • Ability to think beyond the screen—designing with real-world build and use in mind
  • Strong communication skills, particularly when collaborating with shop floor and fabrication teams
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management abilities

Equally important:

  • A practical, solutions-oriented mindset grounded in real manufacturing experience
  • The ability to anticipate and solve problems before they reach the shop floor
  • Confidence in making design decisions that impact production efficiency and quality

Education

Engineering degree or Engineering Technologist/Technician diploma.
